The word "phalanges" comes from "phalanx," the Greek military formation which was emulated by Spanish fascists who would go on to be a watchword for fascist movements. Most early fascists were more intellectual than street fighters, in contrast to the terrifying Italian and German fascists who emerged from World War I.
