Melatonin, a hormone regulated by the presence of light, can have suppressive effects on the maturation of the ovaries and testes, including the decrease of testicle and certain functions within them. Endogenous melatonin, which is the melatonin naturally produced in the human body, has reversible effects on these functions but chronically high levels in children can delay the onset of puberty until the appropriate time.
