Caffeine intake of one to three milligrams per kilogram of body weight 30 minutes before exercise enhances performance and improves mental alertness. However, caution should be taken with citrulline and beetroot for those prone to cold sores as they activate the arginine pathway exacerbating neural-related aspects of cold sores.
