The prevalence of sex outside of marriage was significantly less common in the past, with the exception of brothels, as marriage was seen as the only socially acceptable way to have sexual relations. The act of marriage also determined the value and worth of a person in society, with the ability to marry considered a sign of respectability and social standing.
