The idea that depression is caused by a disorder of the few serotonin cells in the brain is flawed. Instead, depression may have a major part of its biology in the higher cognitive centers of the brain, such as the cerebral cortex and the limbic system, which are predominantly driven by different chemical messengers than serotonin and norepinephrine.
