The initial idea behind the shopping mall was to create a mixed-use center that would serve as a community hub. The first mall, Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota, was strategically built just outside of the eight-mile blast radius in case an atomic bomb was dropped on Minneapolis during the Cold War.
