It is widely assumed that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance of low serotonin levels, but the reality is much more complex. While there is evidence to suggest that changes in serotonin regulation can be intrinsic to the biology of depression, the idea that depression is a pure deficit in serotonin is too simplistic.
