The Comstock Act was signed into law in 1873, making it a criminal offence to send obscene, lewd, lascivious, immoral, or indecent publications through the mail, and to own, give away, or sell them. It was named after Anthony Comstock, who dedicated his life to fighting vice, but by vice, he primarily meant porn.
