Varroa mite, a tick-like pest that was introduced to the United States in 1987, is spreading diseases to honeybees, wild bees, and other pollinators, which threatens global food biosecurity. With the varroa mite spreading 27 viruses throughout the world, researchers are exploring ways to control the mite while also addressing other factors contributing to the decline of bee populations.
