The History of Coca and Coca-Cola
The origin of the coca plant used in Coca-Cola can be traced back to the coca of Colombia, specifically erythroxan, Novogranitensia, variety Novogranitensia. Efforts are being made to create a legitimate market for coca as a nutraceutical, which can provide a legal source of income for the families in Colombia who depend on coca cultivation, and could generate tax revenue for the Colombian government to support peace-building efforts.
