The Value of Causal Perturbations in Brain Research
By controlling the behavior of a single neuron and monitoring a collection of single neurons, researchers can better understand the function and origins of different parts of the brain and neurons. Causal perturbations - turning up or down the activity of certain types or populations of cells - have proven to be particularly valuable for observing the effects of brain activity on behavior.

Summary
Understanding different parts of the brain, their functionality, and the behavior of different neurons, by using causal testing to turn up or down the activity of certain types of cells or defined populations of cells and observing the actions. The goal is to monitor single collections of neurons to gain insight on complex behaviors, and single neurons to draw deeper insights on the origins of different parts of the brain.
