The benefits of paperback publishing used to vary for both the author and consumer, but it seems that those benefits may no longer exist as paperbacks now provide only marginal to non-existent benefits to readers and authors alike. Paperback royalties only pay an author 50% of what they're currently earning per book, which means they'll need to sell twice as many copies to earn the same amount as before, while the cost savings to consumers have also dwindled.
