The FTO gene has a large enhancer known as OB1 (Obesity One) which is a master regulator associated with progenitors of white, brown, and beige fat. The IRX3 and IRX5 genes in the FTO locus are correlated positively with lipid metabolism and negatively with mitochondrial biogenesis.
